Adult Cardiology
Institute of Cardiology Multan is among the busiest hospitals in Pakistan and serving approximately population of 50 million (South Punjab, Part of Sindh, Balochistan and KPK). This institute has revolutionized the treatment of cardiac diseases in this region and providing relief to the ailing community. Adult cardiology is the largest and front line department of the hospital. This 279 bedded hospital became operational in August 2005 with OPD services and later on in October 2009, indoor services were extended. Currently, along with the agile team of clinicians including Professor of Cardiology, Associate Professor, Assistant Professors, Senior Registrars, Medical Officers and Postgraduate Trainees, it has become the leading cardiac centers in Pakistan. This institute is not only offering the best diagnostic facilities but also state of the art and latest treatment to its patients.
OPD
It is catering approximately 200 new patients, along with follow up of more than 1000 patients daily. It comprises 3 screening and 3 consultants room. Patients traffic is increasing day by day.
Cardiology Ward
23 bedded cardiology wards on 3rd floor of the hospital is having central oxygen supply, equipped with defibrillators and other cardiac support measures. Well trained doctors and nursing staff is taking care of every individual patient round the clock. In this ward, the patients of infective endocarditis are admitted in a special space.
Private Cardiology Ward
Private cardiology ward comprises of 14 private rooms dedicated for private and panel patients. These rooms are well ventilated and carry with them the facilities for patients and their attendees.
CCU
19 bedded Coronary Care Unit is centrally monitored, equipped with ventilators, defibrillators also have central oxygen supply and other cardiac support measures. Well trained doctors and nursing staff is taking care of every individual patient round the clock.
Paeds Cardiology
The services for children with heart diseases started with inauguration of the Institute in August 2005. Major milestone was achieved in 2008 by the recognition of Institute by College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan for full Pediatric Cardiology FCPS-II training.

Teaching / Study Schedule
Weekly (on Friday) teaching activity is performed under supervision of consultant. All the MOs are involved in this activity. Teaching includes:
- Group discussions
- Demonstrations
- Short / long case
- Journal club / scenario discussions
- Mortality / morbidity audit
- Surgical cases (Cath conference) are discussed with surgeons on Thursdays
OPD Facility
OPD services are provided on daily basis to patients. Consultant OPD days are Monday. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. All children below 12 years are registered on reception counter and allotted a computerized file number. They are examined by Paediatric trained medical officers in screening room (Room 13). Selected patients are referred to consultant room (Room 12) to get opinion from consultant. Almost 50 children with heart conditions visit OPD on daily basis. The facility also includes following:
- Daily Paediatric echocardiography facility
- A fully equipped echo machine (VIVID 7 Dimension) with volume and transesophageal probes is installed in Paeds Echo room
- All echocardiograms are done by a consultant or senior registrar
Cardiac Catheterization / Interventions
Three Angio machines (Philips ,Siemens & GE) are installed and performing following:
- Diagnostic caths
- Pulmonary valvuloplasty
- Aortic valvuloplasty
- PTMC
- PDA occlusion
- ASD occlusion
- Coarctaion angioplasty
- Stenting
Nuclear Cardiology
In this Department, stress MIBI scan and viability scan are done on OPD basis. The number of patients treated here are around 1000 annually. Nuclear Cardiology Department has been working since 1st November, 2010. It is purely diagnostic department for cardiac disease by using radioactivity and radiopharmaceutical. The department is providing the facility of these following non-invasive diagnostic procedures by using radionuclide techniques:
- Myocardial Perfusion Stress/Rest SPECT Scan
- Myocardial Perfusion Viability SPECT Scan
The department has a dual head SPECT dedicated Cardiac Gamma Camera with Brand Name IS-2 manufactured by Positron USA. This Gamma Camera is specially designed for cardiac scan with high resolution and compensating sensitivity. Moreover, using molybdenum (Mo-99) generator from PINSTECH which is main source of Technetium 99m (Tc-99m), used for disgnosing cardiac diseases. Technetium 99m is unique element with 6 hours half life and 140kv photon energy. For the purpose of stress, different types of protocols for cardiac stress are used according to patient’s condition including:
- Eexercise protocol with ETT machine manufactured by QUINTON
- Argumeter Cycle
- Pharmacological stress with Dobutamine, Dipyridamole (persantin) and Adenosine
Following two types of procedure are used:
- Stress MIBI scam
- Viability Scan
Radiation exposure was minimized by following instructions displayed on the board and special instructions are given to staff and patients. For knowledge and skill enhancement, the staff members attend various workshops throughout the year.
Future Plans
- To increase bed capacity for children after the establishment of new emergency and indoor building
- To extend paediatric cardiac interventions under GA (every Friday after installation of new Angio-machines)
- Induction of new FCPS trainees
- Regular Paediatric cardiac Interventional workshops
- Coordination with Anesthesia Department to perform cardiac interventions under nuclear cardiology
